Crimson Desert is like the videogame version of a 6-in-1 shampoo—it does just about everything, and with its upcoming DLC Charting the Unknown, I guess that also includes The Sims.
Today’s State of Play showed off a trailer with what we can expect to see, and there’s a lot. Like building a whole-ass castle, for example. It looks like you can go pretty ham on some Sims-style building within those stony walls, too—the trailer shows a tool which you can drag to build walls and rooms inside the castle. Yup, just like The Sims! There’s a whole bunch of furniture as well, including a slightly unusual framed portrait of a tiger that Kliff has deigned to display outside his home, for whatever reason.
It looks like you’ll be able to build a village around this castle as well, perhaps similar to the Greymanes camp you form in the main game. There are people cooking, little village stalls, and plenty of chatter that seems to be happening either within the castle walls or just outside of them. How different it’ll be to the Greymane’s camp remains to be seen, but it is looking like a surprisingly cosy endeavour.

Something I am curious about, though, is the fact it looks like Kliff can romance (or at least gussy up to) other characters. There’s a tiny snippet of him offering flowers to one of the game’s witches—something she seems pretty darn jazzed about, by the way—though it’s unclear what purpose it actually serves. I wonder how Kliff would actually rizz anyone in Crimson Desert, for how limited his dialogue is.
Some other bits I noticed include:
- Running on water
- Underwater traversal, including grabbing onto a shark like some sort of aquatic Uber
- Both a traditional looking ship and something more steampunk-looking
- Fellow Greymane Andrew cheffing it up in the castle
- Some crazy laser-eyed mechanical cyclops monster
The most surprising part of all of this, though? Charting the Unknown is set to release October 15. Yes, this October. A mere seven months after launching and somehow cooked up in the midst of a dizzying number of patches and tweaks that have contorted Crimson Desert into something that is completely unlike the game I reviewed back in March.
How Pearl Abyss has managed to do all of this is beyond me, but hey, it’s coming pretty darn soon. I am admittedly pretty giddy at the idea of going full Sims-esque castle building, so I’ll undoubtedly be returning to Pywel before long.
